Michigan has dropped in ranking as having the highest unemployment in the United States, but it is still remains near the top. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, May’s unemployment rate was 10.3%, with Michigan tying with Mississippi for #4, after California, Rhode Island and Florida. Some employers may see a decrease in their unemployment tax in the future as a result of recent legislation reducing the duration of unemployment benefits for Michigan workers, from 26 weeks down to 20 weeks, effective in 2012. The current maximum benefit that can be collected by a displaced Michigan worker is $362 per week. In looking at the maximum benefit amount paid throughout the country, Michigan is in about the middle of the pack. There has been no change in the maximum benefit available since 2002, when it was increased from $300 to $362 per week. Other legislation is currently being considered which would make it more difficult for workers who are terminated to qualify for benefits. These efforts are all in the attempt to reduce the state’s budget crisis.
