We like to think that we live in an enlightened era, but there are times when there’s plenty of proof that things are not like we’d hope them to be. There’s a huge focus not more than ever on making sure employees work in a safe environment free from prejudice, sexism and bullying. Nobody should have to tolerate any of these issues. Unfortunately, there are times when a comment, shouting, swearing, unjustified criticism, exclusion, humiliating language, repeated practical jokes, a gesture or a physical touch goes too far. And while there’s a popular phrase, “nobody likes a snitch,” if it’s not taken care of right then and there, it has the potential to become increasingly worse over time. By approaching your Human Resource department, you will be talking with people who are trained to recognize the inherent pitfalls of an employee coming forward. Reporting the incident is the first step. Don’t wait several days or weeks before reporting something, though. And when you do come forward, be as specific as you can. Emotions may be running high, but details are important. It also doesn’t matter if you are a temporary worker, hourly worker, salary worker or a supervisor. Everybody encounters a workplace problem they can’t always handle on their own and up to a third of workers in the workplace may be victims of bullying. Keep in mind that your employer doesn’t want this sort of thing going on either. Why? It can lead to a high turnover rate (it takes time and costs money to train someone new), low productivity (which may reflect on you if they don’t know what’s going on) and a reputation for that business having a hostile work environment. It’s in the employer’s interest to address these things quickly. The potential negative effects of bullying on your health aren’t worth it. Don’t wait until you’re taking time off, experiencing anxiety, not sleeping or suffering from stomach aches to come forward.
